The San Diego Chargers selected RB Edwin Baker out of Michigan State with the 250th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Baker is 5’9″, 210 pounds and he runs a 4.5 40. Baker is a power runner and he’s a solid blocker. He carries the ball like a loaf of bread sometimes as he fumbled the ball 9 times in his time with the Spartans. He also wasn’t used much in the passing game as a receiver out of the backfield. Baker played in 14 games (8 starts) for Michigan State last year and he carried the ball 170 times for 665 yards (3.9 ypc) with 5 TD runs. He also caught 5 passes for 60 yards (12.0 avg) with 1 TD grab last year. Baker has now played in 35 games (21 starts) in his three years with the Spartans and he carried the ball 462 times for 2,293 yards (5.0 ypc) with 19 TD runs. He also caught 15 passes for 125 yards (8.3 avg) with 1 TD grab at Michigan State. This was a solid pick for the Chargers as Baker was projected to go much higher in this draft.

The San Diego Chargers selected center David Molk out of Michigan with the 226th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Molk is 6’1″, 290 pounds so the Chargers will likely want him to put on a few pounds. Molk is a classic type of center as he makes the line calls and he’s speedy when leading on traps and sweeps. He can hit moving targets in the run game. But, he could have trouble with the bigger NTs in the NFL, if he doesn’t add some weight. Molk played in 13 games (12 starts) for Michigan last year. He played in 42 games (41 starts) in his four years with the Wolverines. I like this pick for the Chargers as Molk was projected to get picked somewhere between rounds 4 and 5.

The San Diego Chargers selected OG Johnnie Troutman out of Penn State with the 149th overall pick (5th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Troutman is a one trick pony as he is a mauler when run blocking. But, he’s slow and often isn’t in good physical condition. He played in 13 games (all starts) for Penn State last year. Troutman played in 43 games (32 starts) in his four years with the Nittany Lions. Troutman always seemed to be either hurt or in trouble at Penn State. Troutman has recently underwent surgery to repair a pectoral muscle and he will be out at least five months and he could possibly miss the entire 2012 season. The Chargers say that they knew about the surgery before they took him. This was a big time reach pick by the Chargers.

The San Diego Chargers selected TE Lardarius Green out of Louisiana-Lafayette with the 110th overall pick (4th round) of the 2011 NFL Draft. Green is 6’6″, 238 pounds and he runs a 4.65 40. Green is a good pass catcher as he is fearless over the middle of the field. Green is a willing blocker, but he doesn’t have enough sand in his shoes to move bigger defensive players. Green played in 12 games (all starts) for Louisiana-Lafayette last year and he caught 51 passes for 606 yards (11.9 avg) with 8 TD grabs. He played in 43 games (31 starts) in his four years at Louisiana-Lafayette and he caught 149 passes for 2,201 yards (14.8 avg) with 22 TD grabs. Green will likely start his NFL career as the Chargers’ #3 TE behind Antonio Gates and Randy McMicheal. That being said I like this pick due to Green’s upside down the road.

The San Diego Chargers selected strong safety Brandon Taylor out of LSU with the 73rd overall pick (3rd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Taylor is 5’11″, 202 pounds and he runs a 4.6 40. Taylor is a good athlete, but he’s going to become a better tackler and better at covering man to man when needed. Taylor played in 14 games (all starts) for LSU last year and he had 71 tackles, 5 passes defensed, 2 interceptions, 7.5 tackles for a loss and 1 sack. He played in 49 games (33 starts) in his four years at LSU and he had 160 tackles, 15 passes defensed, 4 interceptions, 8.5 tackles for a loss and 1 sack. The Chargers were caught reaching here for a need, as other safety prospects would have been a better pick here.

The San Diego Chargers selected DT/DE Kendall Reyes out of Connecticut with the 49th overall pick (2nd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Reyes is 6’3″, 300 pounds…so he projects to play more at tackle than end in the pros. Reyes is very coachable and he’s smart, so the Chargers think he will be able to pick up the pro game rather easily. He has problems holding his ground against double teams, so that is something he’s going to have to work on. Reyes played in 12 games (all starts) for Connecticut last year and he had 46 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss, batted down 4 balls, 4.5 sacks and 1 fumble recovery. Reyes played in 49 games (41 starts) in his four years at UConn and he had 142 tackles, 32.5 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks, 4 batted down balls, 3 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. This was a solid pick for the Chargers who needed help up front on D.
