The Chargers played a lot of young players in the football game on Thursday and they looked pretty decent.  Billy Volek started the game and he completed 5 of 10 passes for 38 yards.  Charlie Whitehurst followed Volek and he looked decent completing 7 of 14 passes for 76 yards and a TD.  RB Eldra Buckley led the way for the Chargers’ running game with 56 yards on 18 carries (3.1 ypc).  Andrew Pinnock also was busy with 11 carries for 30 yards (2.7 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 16 yards.  Rookie WR Craig Davis looked good for the Chargers with 2 grabs for 48 yards (24.0 avg) with a TD catch that covered 40 yards.  The Chargers finished up with 108 yards rushing on 35 carries (3.1 ypc) and they completed 12 of 24 passes for 108 yards.

The defense couldn’t stop the 49ers’ running game as they rushed for 178 yards on 32 carries (5.6 ypc).  The defense did play good against the pass as the Niners only completed 17 of 37 passes for 115 yards.

San Diego Chargers 33, Arizona Cardinals 31

The Chargers looked absolutely awesome on offense on Sunday Night but the pass defense showed some leaks against Matt Leinart and the Cardinals.  Philip Rivers looked ready for the regular season as he completed 20 of 29 passes for 282 yards with 2 TD passes.  Billy Volek finished up the game and he looked solid again completing 9 of 16 passes for 123 yards.  Andrew Pinnock was the workhorse running the football with 15 carries for 60 yards (4.0 ypc).  Michael Turner got his work in carrying the ball 9 times for 20 yards (2.2 ypc) but he suffered a high ankle sprain and could miss part of the regular season.  Darren Sproles was very active on Sunday with 6 carries for 20 yards (3.3 ypc) with a TD run and he also caught 6 passes for 73 yards (12.2 avg).  WR Vincent Jackson looked like a true #1 WR as he caught 4 passes for 92 yards (23.0 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  TE Antonio Gates was also solid with 4 grabs for 56 yards (14.0 avg).  The Chargers finished up the game with 32 carries for 106 yards (3.3 ypc) and they also completed 29 of 45 passes for 400 yards.

The defense did a good job stuffing the Cardinals running game as they held them to 64 yards rushing on 21 carries (3.0 ypc).  The Cardinals did throw the ball all over the Chargers’ defense as they completed 20 of 30 passes for 311 yards.

San Diego Chargers 30, St. Louis Rams 13

The Chargers were efficient on offense, excellent on special teams and they played opportunistic defense against the Rams and that’s why they won the game on Saturday Night.  Philip Rivers completed 9 of 13 passes for 82 yards with a TD pass.  Billy Volek also looked sharp as he completed 7 of 10 passes for 61 yards and a TD.  Charlie Whitehurst only threw one pass and he completed it for 21 yards.  Michael Turner led the way with 9 carries for 48 yards (5.3 ypc) in the running game.  Tyronne Gross (6 car, 27 yards) and Germaine Race (5 car, 24 yards, TD) both looked good running the football against the Rams.  Both Malcolm Floyd and Antonio Gates each caught 2 passes for 39 yards.  Vincent Jackson looked good as he caught 3 passes for 23 yards with a TD and rookie TE Scott Chandler had another solid game with 2 grabs for 12 yards with a TD.  The Chargers finished up with 111 yards rushing on 25 carries (4.4 ypc) and they completed 17 of 24 passes for 147 yards.

Darren Sproles was electric on Saturday Night as he returned a punt 81 yards for a TD.  The Chargers defense only allowed the Rams to rush for 73 yards on 25 carries (2.9 ypc) but the Rams completed 26 of 38 passes for 278 yards.

Seattle Seahawks 24, San Diego Chargers 16

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Pre-Season by dawgpounded on Monday 13 August 2007 at 11:17 am

The Chargers bench allowed the Seahawks to come back and win this game as they allowed 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter.  That doesn’t really matter as coach Norv Turner wanted to get a look at a lot of players so that he could evaluate what he’s got.  Philip Rivers looked sharp completing 5 of 7 passes for 71 yards before he left the game.  Second stringer Billy Volek was outstanding completing 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards and a TD.  Young Charlie Whitehurst had some issues as he completed 11 of 22 passes for 79 yards with an interception.  Running back Darren Sproles was outstanding as he has proved that he’s healthy again.  He carried the ball 7 times for 63 yards (9.0 ypc) and he also caught 4 passes for 36 yards (9.0 avg).  Michael Turner was outstanding as usual with 4 carries for 27 yards (6.8 ypc).  Andrew Pinnock found yards tough to come by as he toted the rock 5 times for 13 yards (2.6 ypc).  The young players at wideout and tight end looked pretty good last night.  Malcom Floyd was outstanding with 5 grabs for 65 yards (13.0 avg) and a TD.  Rookie TE Scott Chandler (4 rec, 47 yards) and rookie WR Legedu Naanee (4 rec, 44 yards) both looked like keepers.  The offense looked good overall despite only scoring 16 points last night.  The Chargers ran the ball 22 times for 124 yards (5.6 ypc) and they completed 29 of 47 passes for 253 yards.

The defense was solid in the first half but it broke down in the 4th quarter which skewed the stats.  The Seahawks ran the ball 28 times for 107 yards (3.8 ypc) and they completed 21 of 30 passes for 255 yards.
