The San Diego Chargers didn’t get much help in last year’s NFL Draft
The San Diego Chargers didn’t do too well in last April’s NFL Draft. Here is a look at what the rookies did last season:
Ryan Mathews: The Chargers traded up to pick RB Ryan Mathews out of Fresno State with the 12th overall pick of the draft. Mathews played in 12 games (9 starts) in which he carried the ball 158 times for 678 yards (4.3 ypc) with 7 TD runs. He also caught 22 passes for 145 yards (6.6 avg) last year. Mathews couldn’t stay healthy last season, and even when he was, he couldn’t beat out Mike Tolbert.
Donald Butler: The Chargers took inside linebacker Donald Butler with the 79th overall pick (3rd round) out of Washington. Butler didn’t play in any games for the Chargers last season as he suffered a torn Achilles tendon. He will get a shot for the Chargers next season as they like him.
Darrell Stuckey: The Chargers took strong safety Darrell Stuckey in the 4th round (#110 overall) out of Kansas. Stuckey only played in 1 game (0 starts) for the Chargers last season and he didn’t have any tackles.
Cam Thomas: The Chargers picked DT Cam Thomas in the 5th round (#146 overall) out of North Carolina. Thomas played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Chargers last season and he had 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Thomas could work his way into a bigger role with the Chargers going forward.
Jonathan Crompton: QB Jonathan Crompton out of Tennessee was the 168th overall pick (5th round) out of Tennessee. Crompton was cut before the season started and his year finished on the Patriots’ practice squad.
Dedrick Epps: The Chargers picked TE Dedrick Epps in the 7th round (#235 overall) out of Miami (Florida). Epps played in 3 games (0 starts) for the Miami Dolphins last season and he didn’t catch any passes.
