The Chargers re-sign 4 key defensive reserves

The Chargers have re-signed DE Derreck Robinson, DT Ryon Bingham, LB Carlos Polk and LB Marques Harris.  Robinson played in 14 games for the Chargers last season and he made 14 tackles, had 1.5 sacks and defended 3 passes.  Bingham played in all 16 games last season and he had 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks.  Carlos Polk also played in all 16 games and he made 45 tackles and 2 sacks.  Marques Harris was a very active linebacker as he played in 15 games and he made 24 tackles, had 3 sacks, defensed 3 passes, forced a fumble and recovered 2 fumbles (one of which he returned for a TD).  These were all great moves for the Chargers who want to keep their team close to intact for the 2007 season.

The Chargers re-sign WR Malcolm Floyd

The Chargers have re-signed WR Malcom Floyd.  He played in 12 games last season for the Chargers and he caught 15 passes for 210 yards (14.0 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  It will be interesting to see how the Chargers use Floyd as he showed the ability to get deep last season.  It’s likely that he will be the #3 or #4 WR in 2007.

The Chargers re-sign center Corey Withrow

The Chargers have re-signed reserve center Corey Withrow to a three year contract.  Withrow is no threat to the starter but he’s a fine reserve.  He played in 11 games (0 starts) for the Chargers last season.  He’s played in 91 games in his 8 year NFL career, but he’s only started 13 of them.

Chargers re-sign OG Kris Dielman

This was a good move by the Chargers as Dielman is a very solid guard.  The 6’4″, 310 pound Dielman started 15 games last season for the Chargers and he did a real good job of run blocking as he has a nasty demeanor.  The Chargers could not afford to lose him.

The Chargers release safety Terrence Kiel

The reason the Chargers released Kiel is because of his off-field problems.  He’s got a trial coming up soon because he was caught dealing drugs and the Chargers don’t want anyone around like him.  Kiel has really screwed up because he’s a good football player.  He played in 15 games last season and he made 53 tackles, defensed 2 passes, forced a fumble and also recovered a fumble.  Kiel played 4 seasons for the Chargers and he played in 59 games and he made 216 tackles, intercepted 4 passes, defensed 17 passes, forced 2 fumbles and recovered three fumbles.

The Chargers release three veteran players

The Chargers have released TE Aaron Shea, LB Steve Foley and WR Keenan McCardell.  McCardell played in 14 games (11 starts) last season and he caught 36 passes for 437 yards (12.1 avg).  The Chargers pretty much phased McCardell out of the line up down the stretch last season so his release is no surprise.  McCardell was a fine player for the Chargers over his career.  TE Aaron Shea and LB Steve Foley didn’t play a down last season.  Shea was injured and Foley was riddled with bullets in a scrape with the police.  The Chargers won’t miss any of these guys.
