LT and defense lead way to 21-14 victory over Raiders

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 27 November 2006 at 1:32 am

LaDainian Tomlinson threw the Chargers only TD pass of the game in the 4th quarter to tie the game and then ran for a TD to put the Chargers up for good as the defense made it stand.

Philip Rivers had a tough game as he completed 14 of 31 passes for 133 yards passing and an INT.  Tomlinson carried the ball 19 times for 109 yards (5.7 ypc) and 2 TDs.  Antonio Gates caught 6 passes for 81 yards and a TD from LT.  Vincent Jackson (3 rec, 32 yards) and Eric Parker (4 rec, 28 yards) each pitched in.

Randall Godfrey led the way on defense with 12 tackles and a sack.  Donnie Edwards chipped in with 11 tackles.  Shaun Phillips had a great game with 7 tackles and 1.5 sacks.  The Chargers held the Raiders to 84 yards rushing on 26 carries (3.2 ypc).  The Raiders completed 17 of 30 passes for 161 net yards passing.

The Chargers improved to 9-2 on the season and have the second best record in the AFC, trailing the Colts by only 1 game.

San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders

The Raiders looked better last week with Aaron Brooks running the show, but they lost anyway.  The Chargers are surging as they have won four in a row and know lead the division.

Look for the Raiders to try to run the ball to control the clock and keep the Chargers defense off the field.  Justin Fargas (329 yards rushing) is now the main man (due to LaMont Jordan’s injury) and they could have success running the ball as the Chargers allow 4.2 yards per carry.  Aaron Brooks gives the Raiders a fighting chance and he seems to have a good synergy with Ronald Curry.  The Chargers have allowed 206.0 net yards passing, so if Brooks has time…..that’s a big IF…..the Raiders could have some success.

The Chargers will run the ball with LaDainian Tomlinson who’s been on fire.  Tomlinson has rushed for 1,037 yards with 19 TDs.  The Raiders defense allows 135.4 yards rushing per game and 4.0 yards per carry.  The Chargers should have success throwing the ball if they feel the need to.  Philip Rivers (2,307 yards passing) has been outstanding this season.

The Chargers should win this football game with ease, but the Raiders will be a little better with Brooks at QB.

Chargers hold off Broncos 35-28 in Denver

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Tuesday 21 November 2006 at 1:55 am

The Chargers got themselves a huge win in Denver on Sunday Night.  Philip Rivers completed 19 of 26 passes for 222 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs (one of which was returned for a TD!).  LaDainian Tomlinson was awesome in this game.  He carried the ball 20 times for 105 yards (5.3 ypc) and 3 TDs.  He also caught the ball 3 times for 74 yards and a TD.  Antonio Gates caught 5 passes for 48 yards.  Eric Parker (4 rec, 42 yards) and Vincent Jackson (3 rec, 39 yards, TD) both helped out in the passing game.

LBs Donnie Edwards (8 tackles) and Shaun Phillips (4 tackles, INT, forced fumble) led the way on defense.  The Broncos carried the ball 35 times for 158 yards (4.5 ypc).  The Broncos only completed 13 of 28 passes for 168 net yards thru the air.

This was a huge win for the Chargers, who are now 8-2 and in first place in the AFC West.

San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos

This is the battle for first place in the AFC West as both of these teams sit at 7-2 on the season.  Both of them have gotten to 7-2 in very different ways.  The Chargers are an explosive offensive team, while the Broncos are a good defensive football team.

The Chargers will not change on offense for anyone.  They will come out running the ball with LaDainian Tomlinson (932 yards rushing, 16 TDs) at the Broncos tough run defense that has allowed only 86.2 yards rushing per game and 3.6 yards per rush.  Philip Rivers (2,085 yards passing) should have success against the Broncos pass defense that has allowed 955 yards passing the last 3 games.  Rivers better be careful on Champ Bailey’s side of the field as he already has 5 interceptions.

The Broncos will come out running the football to try to control the clock and keep the Chargers offense on the sideline.  The Broncos could have some success, because the Chargers allow 4.1 yards per carry this season.  The Chargers defense has been very vulnerable to the pass, so at some point Jake Plummer will throw the ball deep to Javon Walker (41 rec, 731 yards).

The Chargers have not played well in Denver in the past, but this should be a great football game.  The QB that plays better Sunday Night will be the winning QB.

Chargers come from way back and win 49-41 in Cincinnati!

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 12 November 2006 at 10:17 pm

Things were looking bad for the Chargers at halftime as they trailed the Bengals 28-7, but something happened in the locker room…..and the Chargers out-scored the Bengals 42-13 in the second half to win the game!!!  Philip Rivers had an awesome game completing 24 of 36 passes for 337 yards and 3 TDs.  LaDainian Tomlinson had a fine game too, carrying the ball 22 times for 104 yards (4.7 ypc) and 4 TDs, he also caught 6 passes for 54 yards.  Little-used WR Malcolm Floyd had a huge game with 5 catches for 109 yards and a TD.  Antonio Gates caught 5 passes for 69 yards.  Brandon Manumaleuna caught 2 passes for 14 yards and they were both TDs!

The defense didn’t play too well except for Donnie Edwards (16 tackles) and Shaun Phillips (6 tackles, sack, fumble recovery).  The Bengals ran the ball 28 times for 124 yards (4.4 ypc).  The Chargers allowed the Bengals to complete 31 of 42 passes for 421 net yards passing.

This was an unbelievable game to watch.  I’m still stunned that the Chargers won this football game!

Castillo out

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Sunday 12 November 2006 at 12:57 am

Starting DT Luis Castillo is out indefinately with a high ankle sprain.  Jacques Cesaire will start until Castillo can return.  The Chargers defense is pretty beat up going into the game with the Bengals this week.

San Diego Chargers vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 10 November 2006 at 6:29 pm

This game pits two teams that are moving in different directions.  The Chargers have won four of their last five games, while the Bengals have lost 4 of their last 5 games.

Look for the Chargers to run the football against the Bengals who allow 129.3 yards rushing per game and 4.3 yards per carry.  LaDainian Tomlinson (828 yards rushing) and Michael Turner (344 yards rushing) will both have huge games on Sunday against the soft Bengals defense.  Look for Philip Rivers to dice up the Bengals secondary when they creep up to stop the Chargers running game.  Antonio Gates should have a big game and so could Keenan McCardell or Eric Parker.

The  Bengals should come out throwing the football to set up the run.  With alot of the Chargers defense out for the game, the Bengals offensive line must step up and protect Carson Palmer.  Palmer has been a little skittish in the pocket due to his injured knee, but if he has time he will have success throwing the ball to Chad Johnson (40 rec, 483 yards) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (39 rec, 488 yards).

Look for the Chargers to bully the Bengals with their running game thus controlling the clock.  I do think that Chad Johnson will have his best game of the season this Sunday.  This should be a great football game to watch with alot of scoring.

Philip Rivers saves San Diego Chargers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Thursday 9 November 2006 at 12:37 am

Marty Schottenheimer wanted to keep Drew Brees because he wasn’t sure of what he had in Philip Rivers.  The coach has to be ecstatic at how well Rivers has played this season.  Rivers has completed 66.4% of his passes for 1,747 yards with 10 TDs and only 3 INTs.  Rivers has compiled a QB rating of 96.7 which is among the league leaders.  Rivers has a lightning quick release and he has great field vision.  The Chargers are going to be good on offense for a long time with Rivers leading the way.

Chargers outlast the Browns 32-25

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 5 November 2006 at 11:49 pm

The Chargers played a good football game on Sunday.  Philip Rivers had an efficient game, completing 19 of 28 passes for 211 yards.  LaDainian Tomlinson had a monster game.  LT carried the ball 18 times for 172 yards (9.6 ypc) and 3 TDs, he also caught 3 passes for 20 yards.  Michael Turner carried the ball twice for 21 yards.  Eric Parker (65 yards) and Keenan McCardell (64 yards) each caught 5 passes for the Chargers.

LB Donnie Edwards had a good game with 9 tackles and an interception.  Randall Godfrey had 7 tackles and a sack.  DE Jacques Cesaire had one of his best games of his career with 3 tackles and 2 sacks.  The Chargers held the Browns to 89 yards rushing on 28 carries (3.2 ypc).  The Browns completed 25 of 43 passes for 204 net yards passing.  The Chargers did score a TD on defense.

It wasn’t easy for the Chargers, but it was a big win for them as they kept pace with the Broncos.

Chargers vs. Browns

Blogged under Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Thursday 2 November 2006 at 11:46 am

The Cleveland Browns have to feel good about themselves heading into their matchup with the Chargers after beating the Jets in Jeff Davidson’s first game as offensive co-ordinator.  The Chargers are 5-2 and trying to keep pace with the Denver Broncos.

Tbe Browns will look to run the football and control the clock.  RB Reuben Droughns rushed for 125 yards against the Jets and will be facing a defense that only allows 84.7 yards rushing a game…..but 4.1 yards per carry!  The Browns think they can have success running the ball, as long as they stick to it.  The Browns utilized the TEs alot against the Jets and probably will try to do the same this week, as Kellen Winslow gives them a mis-match most of the time.  Look for the Browns to take a few deep shots to Braylon Edwards and Joe Jurevicius do to the fact that the Chargers will be without their two best pass rushers, Shaun Phillips (injury) and Shawne Merriman (cheater).

The Chargers will be running the football as soon as they get off of the team bus.  The Browns allow 136.1 yards rushing per game and 4.4 yards per carry.  LaDainian Tomlinson (656 yards rushing) and Michael Turner (323 yards rushing) should find little resistance from the Browns on the ground.  Look for Philip Rivers to attack the Browns safeties with Antonio Gates on the short stuff.

This should be a easy win for the Chargers, but games aren’t played on paper.  The Browns should be able to move the ball on the Chargers, and keep the game under the 12.5 point spread.
