Antonio Cromartie (1, CB)

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 31 July 2006 at 9:24 am

This was a draft pick for need, plain and simple.  Cromartie looks the part, as he is a big corner (6′2″, 205) and he’s fast (4.4 40).  Cromartie is clearly a projection pick based on workouts because he didn’t get that much playing time at Florida State.  He tore his ACL last summer and missed his junior season and then came out early, and still was picked in the first round.

Cromarite played in 25 games (1 career start) and made 41 tackles, broke up 8 passes and intercepted five passes.

The Chargers are really taking a huge gamble on a player that has only started one game since HIGH SCHOOL.  Only time will tell if this was a good or more likely, a foolish pick.

Rivers time in San Diego

Philip Rivers is about to get the chance of a lifetime, he’s now a starting QB in the NFL.  Rivers has very little experience but the Chargers front office really likes him, so we’ll see if they’re right about him.  Rivers has only played in 4 games (no starts) and has only thrown 30 passes (completed 17) for 148 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT for a QB rating of 67.1.  Rivers is a big guy, but he doesn’t really move very well, and he throws with a low 3/4 type delivery (sidearm).  Schottenheimer has done well with a QB with a similar skill set in Cleveland (Bernie Kosar) so we’ll see if Rivers can duplicate that kind of success.  At least Rivers can hand off to Tomlinson or throw to Gates and McCardell, so he does have playmakers on hand.

A.J.Feeley looks to be the second stringer for the Chargers.  Feeley was run out of Miami because he was the master of the pick-six (interceptions returned for a TD).  Feeley is a horrible practice player and it shows on Sundays.  Feeley has very little feel for the QB position and has gotten by on luck.  Feeley has appeared in 18 games (13 starts) and completed 54.8% of his passes for 3,047 yards with 19 TD and 21 INT for a QB rating of 67.3.

Charlie Whitehurst is the current #3 QB, but he could move up quickly if the two above him falter.  Whitehurst was a good QB in college and his dad was a starting QB for the Packers….pre-Brett Favre.
